No Peeking

When my sister and I were little we would often sit under the Christmas tree and try to guess what was in each of our gifts. We wanted to peek, but were afraid if we got caught we might not get anything for Christmas.

Like the temptation to peek at Christmas gifts, I’ve sometimes wished I could see into the future–especially with a new year just a few days away. But I know my focus should be on today, and there’s no point in trying to peek into the future.

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” God wants us to leave the future in His hands, knowing He will be there to help us through anything that might occur. If we become too concerned about things that might happen, we’ll lose sight of the joy God has given us today. It’s never good to try to peek into the future or worry about what lies ahead. Our future is in God’s hands, and He will see us through. Here’s a thought for the New Year: You can’t see around the corners, but God can.

  1. That is one of the verses that I refer to often when talking to my kids about my faith. Try to live and treat others in a way that is pleasing to God, remember, there is a God and you are not Him (mostly a reminder to self!), and remember, what can worrying about tomorrow add to today?

  2. Thanks for the verse:) I never peeked at my presents but my brother would always try to tell me, i wouldnt beleave him tell i opened it up and it was what he waid it was, i was so sad, I like the gift but the exsightment was gone. I am sad to say i am one that likes to peek at the end of the book too. I like to know everything is going to end ok. Like you said I would like to see the futor and what God has planed for us, I think our faith wouldn’t be as strong if we could, we wouldnt turst him because we dont like the outcome at the time, or dont understand it, because the middle peaces are missing. If I looked ahead of some of my trials i wouldnt like the outcome, but haveing the gone threw different trials has brought me closer to God and the outcome beter then if i peek because I know what God did to make it hapen and THat he loves me! thanks

  3. I have to confess. I was a snooper when I was younger. With the New Year just days away, my resolution for 2012 is to put more time into reading daily spiritual readings. I too wish I could see what was ahead for me in the future, but I put my faith in God to guide me in the right direction.
God bless and I hope you and Richard have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

  4. Sometimes I wish I could look into the future. However this year I have found our future belongs to God and God will take care of it. He does so abundantly in ways we never thought possible. I have reached the conclusion if we knew the future we might not be able to handle it. Also uncertainty helps us trust God, and mature our spiritual fruit. Thanks for the wonderful reminder Wanda. In the upcoming New Year I pray people will live each day to the fullest. As Corrie ten Boom previously stated, “On the calendar, there is only one day for action and that is today.” Luke 22:27-29 is a passage of scripture I find comforting when I end up contemplating the future. Cheers and Happy New Year everyone!

  5. I think we all wish we could look into the future, but sometimes that might not be the best thing. Even though sometimes it is hard to wait for an outcome, that is what faith and hope in the Lord is all about. We have to work at it, and that isn’t easy, but the Lord never said it would be easy, he just asked us to follow Him and trust Him.

  7. We should live each day as if it is our last. Enjoy the time we have doing something nice for other people instead of wondering what the future holds for us. God helps us throught difficult times without us realising it. … By the way my daughter and I really enjoy reading your books.
