Songs of Praise

The Amish use no instruments to accompany their singing during church, yet whenever I hear them lift their voices in song I know they’re offering praises to God. Many of the hymns in the Amish Ausbund, as well as those hymns found in other denomination’s church hymnals, were written to help us understand the beliefs and suffering of those who wrote the hymns of old. These songs are a reminder of the songwriter’s faith, and were often written during times of suffering, although many of the hymns are songs of praise.
God likes it when we praise Him. In Luke 19:40 Jesus told the Pharisees who had rebuked the people for praising Him, that if the people didn’t praise Him, the stones would cry out. Songs that glorify God can reach the deepest level of our hearts. What better way for us to praise God than through singing songs of praise?
One of my favorite hymns is The Old Rugged Cross. What are some of your favorite hymns? In what way do the words of the hymns speak to your heart? The next time you sing a hymn try to visualize the time period it was written, and the condition in which the writer of the hymn lived. Think about the praise it offers to God when we sing songs to Him. Think about the joy it brings to you.

  1. My favorite hymn is, How Great Thou Art. It is such a powerful song! It feels my heart as if it is bursting. I feel very insignificant as if I am looking up at the night sky. I cannot fathom sometimes of how I feel when I hear this song.

  2. I love How Great Thou Art also. As a child my piano teacher actually chose that as my recital piece. I must say I have played that countless times. And it makes me appreciate the words of the hymn so much.

  3. I like How Great Thou Art. Beautiful song. Not sure the history of the song or the writer. I like to praise God in songs. That kind of praise comes easier to me that praises in prayer. When I sing it comes from the heart. There are many beautiful hymnes to be sung.

  4. One of my all time favorite hymns is AMAZING GRACE ( CHAINS ). I hum it a lot during the day while doing chores. We had it played at my mother’s funeral and I couldn’t help but cry, yet I felt at peace at the same time.

  5. One of my favorite hymns is Blessed Assurance. I love singing praises to my Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas, Wanda!

  6. I love the Doxology sung in Acapella. The Mennonite version is 4 pages long, and fills my heart with gratefulness! I’d love to find the music and learn it!!

  7. I just love reading your books. I have got to meet you and your are very sweet and caring. I can see that this goes for everything you do. Merry Christmas and God Bless you and your family.

  8. I love the feeling I get when singing “Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone”. I helps me to feel the presence of God with me and the freedom I experience with God as my Lord and Savior. Merry Christmas to you and your family. May God Bless All Of You!!!

  9. One of my favorite hymns is The Longer I Serve Him. As the song mentions the words, the sweeter He grows. He is always by my side whatever I am doing. His presence is so real in my life and He gets sweeter every day!

  10. As I was reading your journal this morning I was thinking of my church and my church family. A big part of our church family is the choir. They do such a wonderful job of ‘lifting’ every one up in song and praising God!! It is such a joyful experience. I do have my favorite hymns….and I am trying to think of which would be the one to put here….
I believe my very favorite is “Be Not Afraid” and “Here I Am, Lord”….when those are sung my heart sings!!! Have a blessed holiday Wanda!!

  11. One of my favorite hymns is “It Is Well”. Knowing the story of the author of the hymn adds meaning to this song. Despite financial problems and deaths of loved ones he wrote, “It Is Well”. Although I mourn the death of my beloved husband and the recently death of my beloved daughter I can sing this song knowing that it is well with my soul. I have hope because of Him.

  12. “Amazing Grace” written by John Newton in 1772 after having a stroke and going through many trials and troubles in life. It is through God’s Amazing Grace that I have salvation through Jesus Christ dying on the Old Rugged Cross for my sins. During my precious Mothers fight with cancer, three nights before her home going I sat by her bed and sang Amazing Grace to her at2 o’ clock in the morning. She became calm and slept through the rest of the night. Merry Christmas and may God’s Amazing Grace touch each of you this Season.

  13. “It Is Well With My Soul” has been my favorite for many years. Even when we struggle with the hardships in this world and things don’t go as we would like, we can rest in the assurance that these things do not separate us from our Lord and Savior. In the end, it is only our relationship with our Savior that matters. Have a blessed Christmas season, Wanda!

  14. I have always loved singing, although I cannot carry a tune. Music just seems to lift my soul. One of my favourites to sing is Tune: “I know not why God’s wondrous grace”, Author: D. W. Whittle (1883). My friends remind me that I do not have to carry a tune, but they say I definitely do make a joyful noise. Which proves the Lord know what is in our hearts.

  15. My favorite song is Just a closer walk with thee. It really speaks to me, because that is what we all should seek to walk as close to Jesus as we can.

  16. Some people just have the natural voice to sing with out any music, but weather it’s singing or praising
our lord Jesus Christ is something we all should be doing.Merry christmas to all and Wanda I hope you and
    your husband enjoy the Holidays.

  17. Hi Wanda,
My church, like most modern churches use instruments to accompany our singing. Although it is beautiful, it often drowns out our singing. I often wonder just what we would sound like without them!
My favorite Hymn is We are an offering. Its a very short song but it had every component of my every day prayers. A line reads: All that we have, all that we are, all that we hope to be, we Give to you, we give to you. Just how perfect is that message!
    God bless and Merry Christmas,
    Vanessa

  18. My husband and I enjoy alternating between attending a service with traditional hymns and one with contemporary Christian music since we find both worshipful. I appreciate having the music to help me follow the tune. Have a blessed Christmas!

  19. One of my favorite hymns is “It Is Well”, written by Horatio Spafford. I think of the true story behind that hymn (a man who faced many trials — financial ruin during the Chicago Fire, and then losing his family when they made a trans-atlantic voyage without him, and their ship was lost at sea) — and it gives me hope that no matter whatever trials I might be facing, I could be like this man, and say, “It Is Well With My Soul”, in the midst of them. That he could go through everything he went through, and still sing this song of praise to God is awe-inspiring to me.

Here is the link, for anyone who might light to learn more about this song, and the background behind it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Is_Well_with_My_Soul

  20. Thank you for sharing your journal with us. Amazing Grace is a favorite hymn as well as The Old Rugged Cross.
    Have a very Blessed Christmas

  21. One of my many favorites is “Amazing Grace” It was by His grace that he saved me and He offers me grace throughout my many years of life. Our God is a God of second chances….. that’s what I love about my LORD!

  22. It is so hard to pick one favorite hymn, but I would have to say the song that touches my heart the most would probably be What A Friend We Have In Jesus. While visiting my aunt in Nebraska when I was probably about 5 years old my aunt sang that song to me while driving through Omaha. She always told me that I would always have a friend in Jesus if I accepted Him as my savior. Well, I did during that vacation when I went to church with my aunt during the alter call when Just As I Am was being sung! Almost 50 years later I hum those two songs, along with Amazing Grace, Blessed Assurance and a few others when I find myself struggling. Just humming a few bars of any of the old hymns brings comfort and peace. And, when my children or others come upon me humming they know it’s not quite the time to interrupt me as I’m in my “God and me” time.

What a wonderful journal entry to encourage others to share such a wonderful topic!

Merry Christmas to you and yours Wanda … you are a blessing to many.

  23. I love Amazing Grace. I think it is a beautiful song. I love the words and it brings peace to my heart. I want it played at my funeral one day.

  24. It’s hard to pick just one but I love the song amazing grace (my chains are gone). Every time I hear it I can help but think about what my life would be like without God being there with me or helping me when I have a bad day or just when I feel alone just knowing that He is there with me through it all

  25. “It Is Well With my Soul” still gives me joy, strength and encouragement every time I hear or sing it. Composer Horatio Spafford had lost his children and dwellings due to three different tradgies and was headed to England to meet his grieving wife. When God gave him the words to this beautiful ymn. I have lost a lot during my life but the words to this song and Gods word has helped me weather every storm. God is so Faithful and Good!!!

  26. I have enjoyed reading your Amish stories for several years and can’t wait to read the Lopsided Cake. I finished the Discovery Series and loved them. I am reading book 1 of Sisters of Holmes County. I read the last two first so maybe I nedd to reread those.

  27. I LOVE THE SONG JESUS HOLD MY HAND! I LOVE THE WORDS AND IT LETS ME KNOW HE IS ALWAYS WITH US HOLDING OUR HAND! MERRY CHRISTMAS WANDA LOVE ALL YOUR BOOKS! HAVE A BLESSED DAY!

  28. Hi Wanda, one of my favorite hymns is Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. Throughout life, we face all kinds of obstacles and the only way we can cope is by leaning into our Father’s arms. God bless you! Merry Christmas.

  29. I have many favorites, but the first that came to mind today is IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL. When I am having a rough day, I can lift my voice in praise to God with this song…starting out a bit warbly but soon my smile has returned and God has reminded me of all my blessings, chief being He as given me forgiveness of sins and eternal life through His Son Jesus.

  30. Thank you Wanda for sharing your thoughts and journal with me..Your journals are so beautiful. I love reading them. I have many favorite hymns, too many to list. But some of them are The Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace and Just A Closer Walk With Thee among others. I love Christmas time and celebrating Jesus. I love reading your books. They are so beautiful. I hope that you and your family have a very Merry Christmas. And a blessed week. Looking forward to your next journal entry. Take care

  31. I lo e to read the history of the songs. Do many bring back so many memories. I love “How Great Thou Art” as it was my grandfather’s favorite and was sung at his funeral
I also love the story about “Silent Night”.

  32. Wanda, I only buy your books nowadays. I have read the healing quilt and now I am reading White Christmas Pie. I have to ask…. Have you ever eaten the White Christmas Pie? I see the recipe and it looks like it would taste like a flour batter as there does not seem to be a lot of flavor in it except for the Whip Cream.

  33. My favorite hymn is “Alleluia” It is something I enjoy hearing but I am not the best singer so I can’t reach high notes. I also enjoy the “Our Father Hymn” and Old rugged cross.

  34. My favorite hymn is ” precious Lord Take my hand”. I know some day the precious Lord will be there to take my hand. I love your books Wanda, I like how the Amish stories make you think of others and the simpler live.

  35. How Can I Keep from Singing? is the favourite here and the title says it all. we have so much and singing is a way to saying ‘thanks’.

  36. My favorite hymn is not an old hymn, but fairly new. It is “Because He Lives.” If He did not live we would all be in our sins and destined for hell. It was written by Bill Gaither when they had just had a new child and everything was in a turmoil in their lives. His and Gloria’s (wife) music had come to a standstill and they were questioning if this is really what they should be doing. God gave Bill the above song.

  37. “It is well with my soul” is a wonderful hymn that reminds me that my life is wonderful and the small ‘hiccoughs’ in life are trivial compared to what other suffer. I try to be mindful of the history behind its writing when hearing it. Thank you.

  38. I like the hymn, “Wonderful Grace of Jesus” Because it reminds us of how Great God’s grace is! Of course there are lots of great hymns many have already been mentioned.

  39. THE OLD RUGGED CROSS WAS MY GRANDFATHER’S FAVORITE SONG TOO SINGING IN CHURCH. HE IS GONE NOW BUT I CAN STILL HEAR HIS VOICE SINGING THAT SONG. BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. I JUST LOVE ALL YOUR BOOKS AND READ EVERYONE AS IT IS RELEASED. WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU ONE DAY !

  40. I never thought about it that the Amish did not have musical instruments. My favorite hymn is Amazing Grace and I just love hearing it and singing it in Church. I want to have it played at my wedding as well. I feel at peace when I hear it.

    1. Actually, the Amish DO have musical instruments. They simply don’t use them in their church services, as the Englisch do.

      1. That is correct, Lynn. My husband has played his harmonica and guitar, along with several of our Amish friends who also had those instruments. They enjoy playing them when getting together with family and friends.

  41. I have a lot of favorite hymns. Amazing Grace, there is Power in the Blood, which mom used to sing as she worked around the house :-), How Great Thou Art.. I could go on and on. Now days our Church sings a lot of newer songs but I love it when we get an older hymn in there.

  42. One of my favorite is “It Is Well With My Soul”..a reminder that no matter what I may be going through…my soul is safe.

  43. Mine is called Halleluah I have it spelled wrong but then I also love The Old Rugged Cross and my one that is sung around the holiday time is Mary Did You Know. Those songs always brings me to tears as they just hit my heart and make me feel good. When I am having a bad day sometimes after my bible readings i will sing one of those songs or i look in the old book from last year i have and look up songs we sing in church that i know and like . It always helps me and i know when i am walking with the pups it always makes our walks down into the trees better!

  44. As a church musician myself, I find that I enjoy most of the hymns our music director chooses, since he puts so much care into matching them to the readings, gospel, and season of the church year.

As we start Advent, I must admit that I love “Veni, Veni, Emmanual” (“O Come, O Come, Emmanual”), that starts and ends all of the Advent services.

On a more secular note (pun intended), the song “Mary, Did You Know?” always reaches out and grabs me. There is a youtube version by the acapella group the Pentatonix, done in a cave, that is simply exquisite, as long as you can ignore the slight mismatch of voice and film.

  45. Sweet hour of prayer is my favorite. Winter is encasing us. The sun may not be out but we can go somewhere warm and bright. Thank you Wanda. God bless you and your family.

  46. I love “O Come All Ye Faithful”! My favorite teacher in high school, my Latin teacher, would sing it in Latin every year! To this day, I remember the words in Latin first, & it brings back sweet memories!

  47. My favorite hymn is “What A Day Thar Will Be.” Why? Because it reminds me that one day I will see Jesus…as well as friends and loved ones who have gone on before!

  48. My favorite h6mn is “When We All Get to Heaven”. It remind us of what a glorious day that will be….when all of our loved ones we will see!!

  49. I always loved the hymns I’d hear in church as a kid and I still very much love them as an adult. My favorite as a child was I’ll fly away it was a favorite of mine and my sisters, we always loved hearing a fellow church lady sing. she had one of the most beautiful voices and when she’d sing that song I just felt so close to god and the heavens, even as a child I knew I’d always have god by my side through the good and the bad and he’d always be a constant in my life no matter what. I do also love Amazing Grace and I can only imagine…such beautiful moving songs..makes my heart so happy to know that when this beautiful life is done I’ll be moving on to my forever life with our king . I hope you have wonderful holidays with your family Wanda, can’t wait to read all the new books coming out. God bless you so much

  50. One of my favorites is, Church in the Wildwood. I lost my grandmother when I was 9 (in the mid 60’s) but can still remember her playing the organ and us singing. Another is. Praise You in this Storm by Casting Crowns. Of course Jesus Loves Me, the first song I taught my son, I could go on and on!

  51. Two years and 3 months ago my now 87 year old husband decided that it was time for him to quit driving, which meant I became the one to do all of the driving. Our marriage is a second one for each of us. His first marriage ended with the death of his wife of nearly fifty years dying of cancer. My first marriage ended when my youngest of six kids was 15 and my oldest was 32. That marriage had survived as long as it possibly could and even though I knew God approved divorce, but also hated it, life has taught me the “whys” of both situations.

When I began dating my second husband, he took over almost all of the driving for me, other than my drive to work and back, which for one year was 18 miles each way, but for the next 15 years, after we moved to where we now live, was only 3 miles each way to and from work.

Becoming the full time driver was frightening for me and each time I drove to visit my kids 26 miles from our home, I began a habit I still continue of singing Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, I’ve got A Mansion Just Over the Hilltop, I’ve got a Home in Glory Land That Outshines the Sun, etc., and I went from there to singing my personal prayers all the way to my kids homes and then I repeat(ed) the same kind of singing all the way home, always with prayers for safety for everyone on the road, my husband who was home alone, my kids and their families and gratitude to God for all of my blessings.

Although I didn’t realize it at the time I began doing this, it brought back the memories of when I was in the marriage with the father of my children and I sang my prayers for our survival mentally, emotionally and physically each day as I worked. I remember my youngest son, when he was little saying, sing that again, Mom, sing that again, which of course I couldn’t, as each song/prayer I sang was different according to what was going on in my/our lives that I needed God’s help with or was thankful for.

That son is now 37 years old and is an accomplished musician, who, guess what – writes songs that he plays on the guitar, banjo and other instruments and sings those songs as solos and at times with whatever other musician he is performing with.

My gratitude to God for allowing me to find Him as a child cannot be expressed enough. He became my best and often only friend from the age of 8 years old and continues to be my best friend now at the age of 72 and I am very thankful. I love your books and all books about the Amish and Mennonite families and faith and am so thankful that a few years ago I discovered your books and those of the other authors of similar types of books! May God bless you and yours always.

  52. The Old Rugged Cross is a special favorite hymn of mine also. My maternal Grandmother was a very good pianist and she used to play it and sing for me. I love Jesus and the wonderful memories of my beloved Grandmother which this hymn brings. Blessed Christmas to all.

  53. One of my all time favorite hymns is Amazing Grace. As much as I like some instrumentation along with singing (like a violin in the background), there is nothing like being able to sing accapella and hear ALL of those lovely voices sending their praises up to God with love.

  54. Hello Wanda, “The Old Rugged Cross” was my grandmother’s favorite hymn and is one of my favorite hymns as well as “Amazing Grace”. At Christmas time my favorite song is Silent Night. I still to this day, at the age of 67, cry every time I hear or sing this song. Away in the Manger is my next favorite. When I hear or sing any of these hymns or songs I think of the love Jesus has for me and what he sacrificed for me that I may have eternal life. He lived simply, had nothing and loved unconditionally and yet the world wants to take him out Christmas and our society. At a time when we should all be thankful, most are worried about gifts, decorations, lights and how much money they can spend. Accolades to the Amish for keeping Christmas what it should be. A time spent praising Christ, and fellowshipping and loving on friends and family. May we always remember to keep Christ in Christmas and our hearts everyday, all year long. I wish Christmas blessings to you and your family and wish you a prosperous and Happy New Year..I hope you and your daughter-in-law are feeling better. I am in the middle of reading “The Lopsided Christmas Cake” and looking forward to your next book.

    Merry Christmas,
    Your fan,
    Vickie Bartosh

    1. I too love those songs. They remind me of my grandparents singing them as I sat beside them in church. Christmas time is one of my favorite times for listening and singing songs. The feeling and knowing that the birth of Jesus is near. The miracle of Christmas and family. Bringing back memories of the past and hope for the future. Merry Christmas

  55. My favorite hymn has always been Pass It On. I have loved that song for 30+ years. I learned it in high school when I went to church camp and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My son goes to the same church camp now and accepted Jesus this past summer which meant a lot to me. God bless you and your family this holiday season.

  56. I have many songs of Praise/ Hymns that come to mind. Amazing Grace is high on the list as is The Old Rugged Cross. My favorite is Jesus Loves Me because he is there no matter what. He listens, comforts and supports. Without his love for us , we all are lost. No matter how things look, I know He is in control and has a plan. I have been his since I was very young and know that there are times that he will carry you when needed.

  57. I have so many favorite hymns but in looking through some of the one that stands out is “the Unseen Hand” it’s a lovely hymns and is timeless. When my father died, in ’86, I was able to request a special hymn “Faith of my Fathers” and when when mom died, in ’09, I requested “The Dawning of the Day.”

    All have special meaning.

  58. Song of praise it say;s a lot it that. Amish fallow the word of the bible.
I admire their faith in everything they do.
    How they praise the lord.

  59. I do feel uplifted by the hymns in church. I have many favorites including “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow”.

  60. The one hymn that I feel the deepest emotion for is Lift High The Cross. It not only affects me spiritually, it also touches my heart because it reminds me of my parents. Whenever I sing this hymn in church it reminds me of when I was younger and my father would sing it in choir. I can still hear his powerful voice singing it even to this day. It was also my mother’s favorite hymn and she had it played at her funeral. Even though it reminds me of those who I have gone to heaven before me, it also gives me strength in knowing that they are singing it in the presence of my Lord and that there will be a time I will join them in singing it once again.

  61. Some of my favorites are Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, The Old Rugged Cross, & I’m not sure if it called In the Garden. Any one of these gives me a lump in my throat. Enjoy singing in church or anywhere else as a matter of fact. Have a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

  62. One of my favorites is “I’d Rather Have Jesus”. Enjoyed hearing George Beverly Shay sing this during the Billy Graham crusades. Another great song with such a great message.

  63. Victory in Jesus, Sweet Sweet Spirit, Blessed Assurance, and so many more. At Christmas all the carols, but especially O Holy Night. So many of the songs speak to me personally. I have victory, because He gave it. I have a close companion because He never forsakes me. I have the reality of salvation because He performed the work of my atonement and it won’t ever be taken from me. But O Holy Night speaks clearly of His divine holiness coming to all mankind in the humblest of circumstances, God made manifest in the likeness of man to reveal His glory, and bring us reconciled unto Himself.

  64. My favorite hymn is How Great Thou Art. It makes me feel at peace when I hear it. I have been sung to by a couple different Amish children’s groups and they sing wonderfully without music. It made my heart smile when I listened to them and they were proud as can be to be singing.
Can’t get enough of my Amish friends. The ones I have become acquainted with are so down to earth and full of hospitality. A blessed Christmas to all.

  65. Each time I read an “Amish” book , I can just imagine in my head everyone gathered together lifiting their voices unto the Lord. I love a lot of the old hymns, as I was brought up in the chuch, by I life What a Friend We Have In Jesus I really liked your journal entry. Have a Blessed Christmas Season

  66. I connect the best with God through worship. I don’t believe I have the greatest voice but when I sing the holy spirit fills me and something other than my normal voice comes out.
I love so many old school hymns but I also enjoy more contemporary songs as well.
How great thou art is one of my favorites because of my grandmother. 🙂

  67. I enjoy singing “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” Thank you for tell us some of the Amish Christmas traditions. Love reading your books.

  68. I had to think about all the hymns sang over the years.
Our hymns give us inspiration during ordinary time, rejoice with us in times of joy, gives us hope and comfort when we are sad.
“The Prayer of Saint Francis” is my favorite hymn. “The Prayer of Saint Francis” was written by Sebastian Temple in 1967. Sebastian was born in South Africa. Sebastian was raised by his grandparents in the South African countryside. Sebastian would become a reporter for the BBC, covering South Africa. Sebastian witnessed the devastation of famine, drought, disease, and social injustice. The lyrics of this hymn encourage the virtues of faith, hope and charity. The hymn is uplifting because it lets us know we can always help.

  69. I would have to say The Old Rugged Cross is one of my favorites. It Is Well With My Soul would top the list to. Love reading about the Amish.

  70. i have so many favorites, it is too hard to choose just one. I love Amazing Grace, Sheltered in the Arms, Blessed Assurance. I could go on and on.

  71. I grew up where there were a lot of Mennonites. They didn’t use musical instruments either but their voices were beautiful.
I love The Old Rugged Cross, I remember going to my grandmother’s house when I was a little girl (I am now 80 so that has been awhile ago). I would play it on her old pump organ and sing to my heart’s content.

  72. Sheltered in the Arms of God by Dottie Rambo and Jimmie Davis that was copyrighted in 1969 by Jimmie Davis Music Co. This hymn reassures God’s children that it doesn’t matter the storm we may be facing God is sheltering us in His loving arms. How Great Thou Art by Stuart K. Hine. God was the mighty creator of this beautiful world we live in. Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus by Helen Lemmel is another hymn I enjoy hearing, singing or playing as it reminds me to always keep my eyes focused upon Jesus. This hymn was published in 1922.

  73. Favorite hymns…that would be a lot to list…two favorites would be Just A Closer Walk With Thee and New Jerusalem (written & sung by Randolph Scott…cousin-in-law) and He Touched Me…after having a seizure (due to having cancerous brain tumor) I put all my faith into Jesus.

  74. My favorite hymn is Amazing Grace – Broken Chains. I find myself humming the hymn while I am doing my daily chores.
It gives me comfort and makes me have fond memories of my departed mother.

  75. We have had a Mennonite choir sing at our church and if I hadn’t seen that there were no instruments used, I would have thought they were being used. Their harmony was beyond description!
I love Amazing Grace but I recently have added It Is Well With My Soul and Blessed Quietness toy favorites list. Thank you for this post!

  76. My favorite hymn is In the Garden. The message as well as the history of hymns is so inspiring. I know the new way are so-called Praise songs but I consider the hymns Praise songs as well. I love Southern Gospel the best. Love your posts, always thought provoking!
