Amish Values
In a recent interview I was asked what draws me to the Amish. My answer was that I am drawn to their strong, Christian values. Since my husband and I have many Amish friends, and have been able to spend a good deal of time with them, I’ve had the opportunity to observe these values. For my Amish friends, God comes first, and then their relationship with family. I have seen our Amish friends make sacrifices to help family members. I have witnessed the close fellowship and strong ties they have with family, which is something I think we all need and should cherish.
Now it’s your turn to answer the interviewer’s question: What draws you to the Amish?
I believe I’m drawn to the Amish because of their family values and their modest dress. They are a people who believe strongly in their faith and values, and have not succumbed to outside influences for hundreds of years. I respect them for this.
I am drawn in by their simple lifestyle. The Amish choose to live so simply. The Amish are certainly aware of what the world offers to “fulfill” and distract them and yet, they still choose to live with very few distractions in their lives. Perhaps the lack of distractions in their lives is what permits them to seek, find and keep God first and the unwavering commitment to family that they have.
I like that they are different and set themselves apart. They are in the world but not of the world. They live off the land and don’t pollute the environment.
I am drawn to the Amish because of their commitment to faith, family, and community. I love the decision to separate themselves from things that do not build, strengthen, or support their faith, family, and community. This separation simplifies their daily lives, and gives them a firm foundation during both the good and difficult times.
Cassandra,
No one could have said it better about the Amish. I totally agree if more people would put family life and God ahead of everything else, life could be so simple. After all, you can’t fail with God behind you.
I love reading about the Amish and their simple lifestyles. I admire that they stick to their beliefs and are not easily drawn into the ways of the world.
My concerns lie only in some groups that have belief that don’t seem to align with Christ’s teachings especially where salvation is concerned. Also silent prayer always seems to be the norm and that doesn’t seem to be faith growing.
Gail,
Silent prayer can be as powerful as spoken prayer and sometimes even more so. I feel that silent prayer brings us closer to God.
I love their simple lifestyle and their commitment to family and God, I also like the way they are always there for each other. If someone has a problem they all share the burden, they never have to carry it alone.
Truly dedicated to the love of God first and second ,family. Hard working, honest, and loving people. Strong in their faith and in daily life. Spotless farms, smiling and happy children, and wonderful cooks. And talented writers, who relate to us readers and keep us informed of Amish lifestyles and traditions………
Being originally from OH, now living in FL. I am really into reading all the AMISH authors I can. I am intrigued by the way they live. So loving of GOD and family. Never a cuss word in any of the books I have read.
I love their values with the simple life. Their willingness to help family and friends. This is what is very important in life. Material things do not matter, the love of family and friends means alot.
To me it seems like such a blessed way of life. In some ways very much like my childhood was. A very happy time of my life.
I am drawn to the Amish Life because I love the family values and the sacrifices that the Amish people make for their family. The Amish people have values, morals, and worship God.
I grew up with family values, morals and loving God. I love the fact that the Amish people have such a simple life and that the modern world does not corrupt them. I realize that not having some of the modern conveniences that the outside world has can be difficult, but the Amish overcome and accomplish what they have set out to do. The Amish people are very blessed and I love all things of the Amish life.
I like that they are so close net, the Amish all just love each other. I think the world would be a better place if we were more like them.
The Amish seem to have the family and community life that most of us have lost. With all of our technology, we have lost personal contact, while they maintain strong family and friend relationships.
I am drawn to the Amish because of their simple life and the admiration to be such a close knit family. They are like what my husband and I families used to be like before we lost our parent and his grandparents. GOD is Aways first which should be the way for everyone. They are very hard workng people and it’s just fulfilling to me..
I am drawn to the Amish because of there core values of god and their family. They are hard workers. With all the hustle and bustle in the modern world reading or going to Amish country lets you slow down and relax.
I also love their strong Christian values and their simple lifestyle. They seem to enjoy their life so much more then some of us.
The Amish people truly obey the first commandment: they love God with all of their hearts and put nothing before Him. No worldly possessions or earthly pleasures will ever outweigh their love of God and devotion to their families. Most of us will never choose to live the total Amish lifestyle but we should try to emulate their beliefs.
I am drawn to the Amish because of there family values. And also how they live such simple life’s and still very happy people.
It is a simpler way of life. My Nannie and Poppa have been gone for many years. They were not Amish but there home was the best place in the world to me. I think of them while I read.
I am not certain what draws me toward reading about the Amish, but I do know that I enjoy all the books and authors I have read. Recently I visited my son in law’s new fire house (which is near my home in Glen Burnie MD); there I met his co-workers. One of the men Ariel introduced me to, was a fellow who is Amish. I was so tickled to meet him and wish he had the time to answer some questions for me. He wanted to know which authors I had read and, of course, I mentioned you and Beverly Lewis and several others. But then the alarm went off, and they had to get to their engines. I will be doing some baking, and taking the crew some banana bread and maybe a hot milk cake or two. Blessings Wanda……I just love all your books!!
I think I am drawn to the Amish because of their way of life. They put God first and family second which is what we all should do. They are there for each other at all times. I love to see them living their way of life. They don’t let the rest of the world run their lives like the rest of us do. Sometimes I wish we all lived like they do. Maybe the world would be a better place and more peaceful for all.
I am drawn to the Amish because their life seems so simple and faith filled. They put their entire trust in God. Family is always first with them. They have a REAL sense of community with their neighbors.
I like how the Amish are able to maintain their simple lifestyle in this day and age.
I am drawn to the Amish because of their faith in God, their hard work and their love for their family.
I think my ‘love’ of the Amish is due to having grown up near them, having observed how loving & caring they are. I think their simpler way of life is good, but I’m too set in my ways to live that way now – maybe in my (much) younger days I could have done so.
I think what draws me to the Amish is the slower way of life. They do not seem to be rushed to hurry, hurry, hurry to get “things” done. The children learn responsibility, unlike a lot of the family now a days. Children are left to their own devices with nothing to do. This leads them to trouble. The Amish really are a devoted people and are self sufficient. I like that way of life. God is a very important factor in the Amish’ life. That’s the way it should be.
I know this is probably not a good reason, but their food draws me. I love good home cooking with homemade jams and fresh produce.
That they place family and God above everything. Plus the simple way of life. They work hard but appreciate everything they have and don’t need or want to be better than their neighbor
There are Amish around where I live. They are some of the most polite and
friendly people around. I admire them for their simplistic lifestyle and strong values.
I am drawn to wanting to learn more always about the Amish life as it is down to basics. Religion and family are a circle along with friends. There is no shunning someone due to a few teeth missing or they arent perfect. There is no comparison or not helping your neighbor. such as if a neighbor needs a garage one is built or if their children are getting married they all get together and build a house and make sure there is all the basics. It is a very plain life so there is no competition with clothes and almost anything.
The choice of living simply. However, in spite of that they face the similar challenges that everyone faces. Their reliance on God and willingness to continue in His path.
I am drawn to the simple life they live. They seem like their families are very closed-knit. Warm & loving people.
I admire the Amish for the simplicity of their lives. They do without so many modern conveniences, yet have an aura of peace and happiness about them.
As some have mentioned, their simple way of life style and devotion to their faith.
I’m drawn to the Amish because I was born and raised Amish for the first 2 years of my life, I still have many many Amish relatives, I enjoy spending time with them, Had a good time growing up an playing with my Amish cousins.
I am drawn to their simplistic way of life……their ability to keep their lives in order & their surroundings immaculately clean. I am fond of their talents for hand sewing and quilting, and baking, gardening and cooking. I love that their children have the opportunity to learn about nature, to run and play outdoors…..to be creative and imaginative, to see the full circle of life with their farm animals and pets. The Amish are emotionally and spiritually connected to all other people in their community.
I am drawn to their way of life and their many talents.
I am drawn to the Amish’s lifestyle and strong believe in religion and family values. They have a lot to offer and we have a lot we could learn from the Amish.
I love the simple lifestyle of the Amish. They love their families and God and are there to help one another when help is needed. Family is important to them. They take time for what is important.
What I find more wonderful about the Amish is that most of them have close knit families and wonderful ties with friends and their community. Everyone helps one another which I find so great as not many non Amish experience this kind of help when things are not going well for them or when they have an emergency and need something to help them both physically and emotionally. I love the Amish creativity as well with their quilts and paintings and other things that I have bought when we visit Lancaster County each time.
Thank you.

I think the atmosphere of quiet, and doing their own work and enjoying the fruits of it, is rare these days.
My husband and I visit Lancaster, PA as often as we can. The Amish to me are down to earth, they have a simply lifestyle, they work hard, they work together, large families that work, play and pray together, they are always there when someone needs help and their beliefs in God. We alwalys find a place to stay that we are near the Amish. It is so peaceful, quite, the Amish are so friendly to you, they are so kind, I love to sit and watch them work in the fields with their horses and they can cook and bake. I totally repect them and their values. I would love to live in Lancaster near a Amish farm and really get to know a Amish family.
I am so amazed by the way they live their lives. They put it perfectly when they say The Plain People! That is how it should be. It is about taking time to be a Christian and living a life that is dedicated to God. It is about knowing hard work and good values and faith will get you everywhere in the end! I love their dedication to what is good and pure and the fact that they are not afraid to be different and not be swayed by the modern world and some of its crazy ways. I could go on and on. I love they way they sit down as a family and eat and pray together and how they help one another.
I am drawn because the simple old fashioned ways that they live by.
I think I am drawn to the Amish because of their closeness to God and their deep appreciation for his creation. They need not “preach” to draw people to God, but simply be what they are which is a loving, close-knit true community refusing to be led down any road or follow any trend that in their perception does not bring them closer to God. I admire their connection to the land. It is more than just appreciation of its beauty, but a true dedication to it and joy in it. I think in the end, what’s simple is true.
Their way of life is different from mine, but I have friends whose way of life and beliefs are different from mine. However, as long as they believe in John 3:16 and other similar verses I consider them Christian friends.
I am drawn to their simpler lifestyle and their family and community-centered way of life.
I love the way they all look out for one another. How eager they are to help those less fortunate and how the simple everyday things make them happy.
I am drawn to the Amish for much the same reason as you. I have an Amish community near me and go as often as I can to visit. I love their Christian values and the way they take care of each other. They are so friendly and caring. They have excellant work and family values. I have asked God many time why I was not born Amish. I have learned a lot from them and changed some of my way of living more simply in some areas.
I love reading about the Amish because I truly enjoy learning how they live such a complete, but simple, life in today’s hectic world. It reminds me of my childhood growing up on a farm in central Wisconsin – the youngest of 10 children. All the work my parents and us kids did – but still had loads of fun. It especially reminds me of everyone working together – baking Christmas cookies with Mrs. Wheeler, helping the Tweets at lambing season, playing in the soy beans when they were harvested – trying to catch all the jumping grass hoppers, music at the town hall, etc. It was a great time to be a kid. Also, being of German heritage I wonder if I have some Amish in my lineage. Hmmm.
I am drawn to the Amish way of life because of its simplicity , their love of family and God.
I love the Amish because they are simple and I live simple. They love God and I do too, I can get lost in the books I read and it calms me.
I admire thier putting God first, and the closeness of family life.
I am drawn to their closeness of family and friends. They always seem to be “with” other Amish, instead of being alone like a lot of us. I like to see that and read about it.

Hi wanda;
My husband and I are both Penna.Dutch & German and love to go out to lancaster,pa.We just love
to be around the amish folks and with my husband’s accent they pick that up right away.We been going to lancaster now for about five years and we are going out again this year. There life and how
they live it is truely amazing,if one barn burns down all the men get together and build another with in a couple of days.If only the americans would live like they do this would be an amazing
country, and I’m not saying that the amish aren’t americans because they are.
The Amish are family oriented and they live Christian lives.
For me it’s my heritage. As an avid genealogist, I’m always researching my family. I’ve always been drawn to both the Amish & the mennonites and their commitment to their faith and their lifestyle. You can only imagine how thrilled I was to discover that one of my great great grandfather’s was an Amish minister. Saddened that obviously somewhere along the line someone left the Amish faith, but delighted to understand my fascination.
I am drawn to the Amish because things seem much more simple in their lifestyle. They are self-sufficient. It would be very difficult to rid my life of so much clutter to which I have become accustomerd to adopt their ways, but it would be quite interesting to know how life might have been growing up in that environment.
One of my best friends was a Amish gal that I worked with. We became like sisters. She was my walking buddy as well. 7 years ago March 30th the Lord called her home. A piece of my heart went with her. Despite her being Amish we had a lot in common. Love their simple way of life and how they are there for each other. I also love hearing them play the harmonica.
I grew up close to an Amana colony in Iowa. They are very simple, kind, christian people. The reason I am drawn to them is their quiet strength. They do not even waste words, and the things they make are absolutely beautiful. I think I am drawn to their simple, humble, envious life.
I love their sense of community. Many of their traditions are not far off from the way I was raised.
Good question, “What draws me to the Amish”? Truth be told I’m not really sure. I know that when I was younger that I wanted to live like the Amish more than anything. I had many friends who were and they showed me what life as an Amish woman was like. They were my role model of what a godly wife should be. Oh I did my best to imitate them to the point of being called the Amish lady who isn’t Amish. Love it, and still do, but now that I am older what draws me is their quite gentle spirit, their strength to live life by their standards. I once heard it said that being Amish was not a religion but a way of life, which in my book, is a GRAND way to live.
I appreciate the calmness and the loyalty to family, friends and neighbors. Yes, they get upset with each other and argue, but it isn’t like ‘we’ do. They may have some they don’t like but they are still there to support them. And the faith they have seems to be true to God and unlimited.
What draws me is a clean, moral lifestyle that is not all entangled in worldliness. I would love living a more simple style of life. I would think/hope it would be less stressful.
I am drawn to the simplicity of the Amish lifestyle. The conformity of the dress and the family being the center of the life.
Their relationship with God and their family and their sense of community and the fact that they can continue to uphold in this fast moving world intrigues me.

I am drawn to the Amish because of their devotion to God, and their simple way of living. The English as they call us are living in such a fast paced environment that we don’t stop and take the time to enjoy God and nature way of life. For all of our conveniences that are supposed to make our life easier, all the do is stress us out more. Give me simplicity any day.
I respect their strong values and lifestyle.
I also respect their first priority being God and then
I really respect the way they immediately start
forgiving others when others have hunt them or
someone they love!!!!!! AMAZING,
I think what draws me to the Amish in our area of Pennsylvania is their kindness. They are always ready with a smile and a wave hello. They come into our library and use the most appropriate manners. When you see them in the local stores they are always thoughtful of others. I have seen them help out others and forgive the English for things done wrongly to their community. Because they serve God first, they set an example to others.
What draws me to the Amish is their simplicity of living How they live off nature and work together..
Put god and their family first. THEY ARE VERY UNSELFISH PEOPLE.
I like the way the Amish work together. It seems that God and family are the most important things in their lives. Material things do not seem to matter.
Non-confrontational and reject the ways of the common Man.
Dedicated to family and community.
