Committing to Memory
When I was a little girl, attending Sunday school and Bible school, I was eager to memorize Scripture verses. Of course, my teacher usually offered a new Bible, or some other prize to encourage me to memorize. Now, as an adult, I am thankful for the Bible verses I’ve committed to memory, as they often pop into my head at just the right time.
Why is it so important to memorize God’s word? First of all, it helps us to be armed when temptation comes. Second, if we meditate on His word, it helps us know Him better. Finally, when we have His word hidden in our hearts, we’re able to hear His voice as He instructs and guides us to do His will.
One of my favorite verses of Scripture is Proverbs 17:22: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”
What’s your favorite verse?
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly that it is so very important to memorize Scripture verses from God’s Word. The verse that came to mind when I read your entry, is Psalms 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” You’ve hit the nail on the head with your reasons for memorization of God’s Word! The Lord richly and abundantly bless you, dear friend! Though we have not met face to face, from reading most of your books and reading your journal entries, and knowing we both have the same Heavenly Father, I consider you my friend.
I think if you can learn and remember things from the bible it is really great we were never asked to do that in our church. but I love to read what others write and share.
Philippians 4.13…”I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. I repeat that one so many, many times…especially when I am doing something that is difficult for me. Praise the Lord that he has given us His Words!
Psalms 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble. The way the world is today, we need to hold on to his word. I have been having a lot of health problem so i hang on to this verse. Another one i like is found in 1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
When I find myself in difficult situations, I can recite Scripture in my mind, and calm myself. In my case, that includes being in the dentist’s chair!
My favorite verse is John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believe in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
my favorite verse is proverbs 3:5,6 trust in the Lord with all thine heart. and lean not unto thine own understanding. in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path.
I often think upon the love chapter. God’s word tells us that the greatest commandment is to love Him above all else and to love others. The love chapter tells us the characteristics of love and I work to make my actions line up.
I also like this scripture:
2 Corinthians 10:5:
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
I am sure I have read this verse, but you setting it apart like this reminds me why I chide myself so harshly when I fall short of His expectations of me. He knows I can do better than I am … to take EVERY thought captive,… I have a lot of thoughts! *big smile* Always growing and learning. *smile*
finely brother, whatsoever is true, whatsoever is noble, whatsoever is just, whatsoever is pure, whatsoever is holy, if there be any virtue or anything praise worthy mediate on these things
That is one that I repeat over and over to myself when I notice I am not taking every thought captive. *smile* Like I said, always growing and learning! *big smile* Sincerely, Mommy of two growing blessings & so much more!
Oh, there are so many verses that are near and dear to me. One of my favorites, which I find myself remembering quite often would have to be 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ~ Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.
The truly amazing thing is that the Lord is the only one who can truly give us a merry heart. Though things may not be going as we hope when we give it to Him, He is faithful to carry us through in many different ways. I am thankful for the scripture that is hidden in my heart because when I am having a hard time it comes to mind, not always in the King James translation but His words come to mind and the truth in them really do set me free from the heart ache that comes with living in this world. Go in peace and keep hiding the inspired word of God in your hearts, for there noone can snatch it away. *smile* Sincerely, Mommy of two growing blessings & so much more!

My most favorite verse that comforts me is: “Be still and know that I Am God.” Psalm 46:10a.
This verse makes me feel safe and gives me comfort always.
