Wanda’s Journal

Similarities

Having visited the Hawaiian Islands several times, and setting my co-authored novel, The Hawaiian Quilt there, I’ve learned how the Hawaiian people have many similarities to my Amish friends. The Hawaiian people I’ve met are deeply spiritual. They also have strong family ties and values. They enjoy nature and spending time outdoors. For the most part, their emphasis is not on worldly things, but appreciating the simple way of life.

Personally, I would rather spend a quiet day at the beach, or outdoors where it’s green and lush, then go shopping at a crowded mall. I get more excited about finding a pretty shell on the sand than buying an new item of clothing or some trinket I don’t really need. I can relate well to people who like the simple things in life that God created for our enjoyment, because that’s where my heart lies as well.

Are there other groups of people who live similar to the Plain People? What are some similarities between you and the Amish?

  1. I agree with you, Wanda. I would sooner enjoy God’s creation than go shopping at a mall. He has blest us with much beauty! We all need to take the time to enjoy God’s Creation!!!

  2. Some things I have in common with the Amish people is that I love God and talk to him and study his word. I attend church regularly . Like the Amish ladies I love to read and of coarse it’s usually Amish Fiction that I read. When I had a moving sale in May before we moved I had the privilege of having Amish people visit my garage sale. Judging by the huge pile of Amish fiction I sold them we also have that in common. I like to bake and the Amish ladies also enjoy this as well.
I hope that you will have a lovely Thanksgiving this year.

  3. I have the same feelings. Simple is best. To many people miss what is right in front of them. Just looking out the window is an enjoyment for me. I love to sit and listen to what God has made.

  4. I too prefer the peace and quiet– the beach, a quiet place in the yard to read or a walk along a country road, Wishing you and your a Blessed Christmas

  5. As always, I enjoyed reading your post about the Amish and their community. In this fast paced world we live in, it is so easy to get caught up in our daily activities and overlook the blessing right in front of us or outside our door, the beauty of God’s creation! While I have never had the opportunity to visit an Amish community, I do hope to be able to one day. Hope you have a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  6. I agree Wanda, I prefer basking in God’s beautiful creation than shopping. I don’t get to the beach often but when there love the sounds of the ocean & collecting sea shells. I love sitting on my front porch swing in the evening watching & listening to the birds sing & watching the sky as it changes colors as the sun goes down while praying.

May you & your family have a blessed, Merry Christmas.
    Blessings, Tina

  7. There is Pennsylvania Dutch in our family history. Since joining FaceBook I’ve found relatives that still live there and we talk every now and then. I enjoy trying the recipes of the Amish. We went on vacation there and I found a small cookbook, looked like something that our church put together. I showed it to my mom and she stole it from me. My dad always had vegetable gardens and grew enough to last all winter. Had a big freezer in the cellar. It’s my dad’s side of the family that’s from PA. Would love to go back there some day and meet my relatives. Enjoy your holiday season!!

  8. Wanda I agree with you that I had rather sit on my back porch and look at God’s beautiful mountains or read a book. My heart is broken this morning that our beautiful Smokey Mountains have burned this week. Much devastation with lives lost and 100’s of homes lost. Please pray for the people of Gatlinburg and Wares Valley communities. Just like the Amish people are pulling together to help these people rebuild their lives.

  9. Hi, I enjoy reading very much..Which now that I am retired I can do more of it..I especially like reading about the Amish..It just relaxes me and takes me away from all the craziness in this world today. I really enjoy your website, also…Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours..

  10. There is another group similar to the Amish. Unfortunately most of them have left us because of their age. I am talking about the generation raised during the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II. They are the people like my father, mother, aunts, and uncles. They believed in living off of the land and using God’s gifts to get them through and believed in God to walk beside them through all that they faced. They believed in family and community. They went through a great deal of heartache and pain and loss, but only came out the better for it! The generations following can learn much from this generation, but unfortunately there are so few of them left! My father taught me to be thrifty, need little, and appreciate what I have; to rely on God to get me through and to always soak in the gifts that He has given me: family, nature, and others. God bless the people of Tennessee. He will be with them through this great tragedy.

  11. Thank you for your books, My mom has been in hospital icu most of the time since nov 7. We are hopefully moving Teds discharge. Your books my library has as ebooks has helped me thru some ruff times.

Merry Christmas to you and your family

  12. I love to read. I have to have the book in my hand. There is nothing like a new book or rereading an old one,

  13. I do dislike malls. If I must shop, I prefer hand-made goods rather than mass produced. And I’m much happier outside with nature.

  14. I want to try the White Christmas pie, but I’m not a fan of meringue. Do you think whipped cream would work for the topping? I use that on my banana cream and chocolate cream pies instead of meringue.

  15. I would much rather live the simple life than all the hustle and bustle of a big city. I try daily to help others and make this world a better place.

  16. I certainly agree! There’s nothing like the sun going down over Lake Michigan or a sunrise in the Smoky Mountains or a beautiful rainbow! Especially when it’s shared with precious loved ones. God is so good!

  17. I would enjoy going to a beach or spending time outdoors than a mall too. I like where it’s more quiet. Happy Holidays.

  18. I will admit I don’t know much about the Amish way of life. While I am not a religious person I do enjoy the gifts of nature. Just yesterday, while out walking, I was caught in a whirlwind of leaves. I giggled like a child and a man passing by in his car gave me a grin. Simple things like that mean so much more to me than a present from a shopping mall (though I do appreciate the insanity the giver had to endure to choose that gift for me).

  19. I’m a school bus driver and the best part is I get to see the beautiful sunrise every morning. I thank God for it every day while driving. I love to visit Amish country. It is so peaceful and people are not in such a hurry. God Bless You and your family during this wonderful Christmas season and always.

  20. My husband and I would prefer to spend a quiet evening reading rather than going to a mall or watching television. We love observing nature–whether it be in our back yard or elsewhere.

    Have a blessed Christmas!

  21. My children and I enjoy looking at the beauty of God’s creation -the fall leaves, wild flowers, clouds, etc. We do not enjoy shopping in crowded stores or malls. One of my favorite Christmas traditions is attending the Christmas cantata at the church where my daughter and her husband are members and hearing my daughter sing.

  22. I have never been about “things”. I do love good books though. They are really my only extravagance. Even as a child, I would rather have a book instead of a toy. I love The Quilt series. I wrote you a personal email some months back telling you how they changed my life. I think if we enjoy what GOD gave us in this world, there will be less disappointments in our lives! Merry Christmas to everyone!

  23. Someways the Amish and I are alike is the Love of God in our lives. They are good church people like myself. They love to bake and I love that. A lot of the women have there own gardens and I am always in mine. I prefer shopping at quaint little shops. I love visiting Lancaster Pa and I love there cute little shops. Much nicer than malls.

  24. I love the strong faith of the Amish; it inspires me so much. I am currently reading The Lopsided Christmas Cake; kind of funny in some ways. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  25. I too, enjoy the simpler things in life. I love the sounds of the waves. It is so relaxing. I enjoy baking for others and seeing the look on their faces when they tell me how good it is.

  26. I’d say traditional Native Americans are pretty similar to the Amish. They are deeply spiritual and rooted in their customs with a strong connection to the Earth and nature. They also have strong family ties to their lands that help keep their loved ones nearby. They live simply and make use of everything around them.

Compared to the rest of our families and friends, we live pretty simply. We own computers and cell phones but aren’t plugged into them all the time. We don’t own a lot of clothes or shoes, and those we have we mend ourselves or pay to have mended. We prefer meals we cook ourselves from fresh, locally grown ingredents to convenience foods or take-out, and enjoy sharing homecooked meals with family and friends. The preparation is fun and is a great way for families to spend time together. I also enjoy baking, canning, knitting, cross-stitching, and gardening. Our house is pretty simple, the furniture secondhand, and simply decorated with homemade curtains and tablecloths, a vase of fresh flowers, jars of pretty rocks and shells we find. We have a large book library in our living room and no TV. We prefer reading to watching TV, and hiking and picnicking to going to the movies, restaurants, or mall shopping. We set aside time for family and for worship.

Reading about the Amish in your books always inspires me to be more like them, and gives me lots of great ideas for finding little ways to live more Amish! 🙂

  27. I can appreciate the simple life also.
My mother lived the simple life in the mountains of West Virginia. They worked hard creating gardens in the clay soil. They had plenty to eat but very little of anything else. Moving to Ohio and marrying my dad improved things some, but she coped well because of her simple upbringing. So many more things and times can be appreciated this way. She shared that with me, and I am most grateful!

  28. I love my new book. I am a very big Amish book person. I use a lot of the Amish recipes. You are a wonderful writer. I buy a lot of your books and always appreciate any given to me.

  29. Gastonia/Bessemer City is a small town and I would love to see you come to our Books-A-Million. I would be first in line to see you.

  30. My favorite things to do – not necessarily in this order – are sewing, baking, reading, southern gospel music, crocheting, crafts, etc. These are so much more enjoyable than spending hours at the mall. I even order supplies online since I live in a rural community far from stores that carry what I need. The most important thing in my life is my Lord and Savior – without Him life has no meaning. He’s there in everyday events as well as all the crises life may send our way. Nothing compares to the love of God and the lovely world He created for us to enjoy.

  31. I love spending time with my family! My greatest memories are with them and I look forward to making more. 🙂 One of our favorite places to go is St. Augustine FL and visit the beach. It is so relaxing!!

  32. As a frequent visitor to the US who on one visit, visited an Amish Community in Illinois and a long time reader of your wonderful books (purchased through our local Sonshine Bookstore in NZ) I have been an admirer of the Amish skills and way of life. I hope to visit another Amish Community this month. I so enjoy your wonderful books. I hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas. Kindest regards Jill

  33. I love to spend time outdoors and enjoy God’s many wonderful creations. We especially enjoy Yellowstone National Park as there is so much beauty and so many animals. Mountains, valleys, waterfalls, geysers of all magnitudes, and so many people to watch. All nationalities are represented and it is very interesting to watch their reactions when they first see (especially) a wolf. We have been to many National Parks and enjoy them all. We have been to the beach on the Oregon Coast and love to watch all the sea creatures especially the whales. I love all flowers and enjoy especially the wildflowers we discover blooming in the spring in the mountains. We have a large family and enjoy getting together to celebrate. God bless you as you continue writing your stories. Have a glorious Christmas.

  34. Some days I will take a book out onto my deck and turn myself so that I cannot see anything but trees – So relaxing

  35. I totally agree with you Wanda….the simple way of life is for me also. I dread shopping trips, crowds, noise….I am a homebody. Ilove my family, my church and my God. I need nothing else. I am in my bedroom right now, and the window across from me…..I see the blue skiy and the beautiful white fluffy clouds and the shiny ripple of the creek we live on. Most peaceful for sure.

  36. We have never visited the Hawaiian Islands but our son was stationed there many years ago and he loved it. So glad you got to enjoy that time and also wrote your book set on the Islands. I look forward to reading it. As you spoke about enjoying the beach or the lush green of the mountains, I could identify with you. We, my husband and I, love the mountains and just driving through. He grew up on a farm and the simple life is what we enjoy. We never go to malls to shop only the small individual stores and we enjoy driving through the country off the interstate to enjoy the local towns and scenery. Thank you for sharing your love of the simple life and its beautiful God given values in your books. We both enjoy reading them. Merry Christmas Wanda and your family also!

  37. Sounds wonderful to me. I love to curl up with an Amish book and relax. I enjoy trying many of the recipes also.I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season!

  38. My husband and i live a very simple life. We try to get as much as we can out of our land by planting big gardens and we love where we live which is not close to any people. It does have the downfalls as it does take awhile to get to town and things like that but we are at the top of a hill as see alot of wildlife which is just amazing. I am from Ca and have been married to him for 14 years Jan 1st and we just love the quiet nights and our 2 chihauhuas. I may be disabled but I watch my husband and help as much as I can. My foster mother was from Hawaii and told us alot about her life there. Although she lived life for her and that was just not right for the foster kids but that was years ago so Happy Holidays and enjoyed being part of your group and also your newsletters. Love to read and post reviews on several sites and will continue to do that with your books and all the authors that i read.

  39. I love reading about the Amish. I too do not like shopping at the mall. I prefer a quiet time with my family and with my books.

  40. I truly enjoy being outside in the dark evening or early morning and looking up at a beautiful night sky. God created so many sparkling, twinkling stars. I, too, enjoy the beach. The first time I went to Key West to snorkel I was amazed! A school of small fish came from behind then separated around me to pass. I was swimming in the school and enjoying it and the sea floor or coral, plants and other fish. Please continue your Amish writings. I have been a faithful reader since the beginning.

  41. I love reading, from books like yours to the bible, I have some things like the Amish. I prefer staying at home and doing things myself rather the going shopping at the malls or things like that. I like having a garden where I can grow my own things. I love cooking and trying new recipes and I love collecting cookbooks and I love Amish food and their recipes to try myself. I also like quiet time with my family or just reading. I love to read your emails and your website. I get a lot out of them. And I love the recipes that you post. I agree with you Wanda. I love living a simple, hate shopping and crowds. I am a homebody and I love it. Thank you for your emails, website and recipes and everything you share.

  42. I enjoy and always looking forward to the peace and quiet rather than a busy shopping mall. I enjoy reading, knitting and cooking.

  43. Similarities with Amish might be my love of God, gardening, cooking and a plain wholesome lifestyle. I love your books. I almost exclusively read Amish Fiction. Sometimes I check out another genre from the library, but after reading a couple of chapters I lose interest and miss reading my Amish stories. No matter what the story line is they always contain biblical lessons. Thank you so much for your work.

  44. I appreciate the Amish values of family and cooperation. Also I enjoy the Amish food. An Amish restaurant in Sarasota, FL has great food and long lines of customers waiting to be seated. Your cookbook would be fully enjoyed.

  45. Being a genealogy buff, I’ve learned that my ancestors followed the way of the Amish lifestyle. They were considered conservative even in their day in the 1800s. Although I have yet to prove the connection to the Amish church, I see the same values of family and work ethic that I see in my own farm family. Only farm folk understand what it is to be called that and what it really means. The sacrifice, the unity, the strong community, the blood, sweat and tears even. I appreciate your sharing those values in your stories.

  46. I truly love your writing about the Amish people and the things that occur daily in there lives. I find it comforting to know that in these scary times we live in some people still care and worry about others

  47. I so enjoy your books, have just about all of them in our library. Can’t wait for the new ones to come out and have a “Wanda read day” under a quilt in the warmth of our home. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  48. I am not one for crowded places, I love to sit on the porch and watch the sunrise in the mornings before the day starts. I enjoy going for walks through the woods and seeing all of the wonderful things that God created for us. I think that country people are similar to the plain people.

  49. Dear Wanda,
I have not met an Amish yet, only read about them or heard about them in the news. Their sense of loyalty to God and to each other is welcoming to my soul.
The Amish people have a life style of work to be able to eat and have shelter, not to enriched themselves with things that they do not need for survival. Even their homes are simple, and not with many possessions that gathered dust. Their family and friends are the priority and they are known to help each other when there is need without hesitation or without saying, “I will pray about it.”
Being a social work I have seen much sadness and the breakdown of families. Our court systems, our helping agencies, and all the others systems that are supposed to help seem to be hurting instead of eliminating deficiencies. I believe if the Amish would run all these system, life for the people would be better because common sense help will be provided when needed and a dose genuine love and compassion will be given. Change will truly take place with remarkable results.

  50. I enjoy your books very much. I like your style. I also love it when you put in an Amish recipe. It was a thrill to meet you when you were in Florida. Hopefully I will meet you again. Have you thought about Terre Haute IN. They have a wonderful Christian book store and a books a billion. I love it that the books are considered to be Christian.

  51. I love reading about the Amish. I admire their workmanship. You have brought me back to reading, something I should have done much more of when I was younger. Thank you for all you offer us. Lovely Christian books.

  52. I have made only one trip to the Hawaiian Islands and that was back about 40 years ago. This year I am making a strong effort of giving my Christmas decoration to a poor family and enjoying a simple Christmas this year. I enjoy doing my draft but they take over my house so it is time to cut back and enjoy life as God as so designed.

  53. How am I like the amish? I don’t know unless it’s that I like to live a fairly simple life. I have the technology like others do but I could live without it if need be. I was brought up frugally and don’t mind living that way now.

  54. I’ve been reading your books for many years. I got started because I don’t live far from Amish country in Pennsylvania. I appreciate their simple lives and admire them for what they stand for.

  55. Thank you so much for your writings. Reading is the way to go any where . I , myself, dont have the money to travel , so i get the beauty of places thru reading. Please keep up the good work. In GOD WE TRUST, AMEN.

  56. Like the Amish, family is very important to me…..I am an only child with no children, have lived my life all around the United States and globe without ever living near a blood relative, so people wherever I have lived and have befriended have been family to me…..and I’ve kept them close always. Nonetheless, I have poured out my affection for blood relatives I never see and some I’ve never met by trying to keep in touch and by creating a massive family tree on geni.com which connects us worldwide historically and to which they all may refer to know our family history and story. That’s been a real labor of love to/for all of them. It seems that we all are one people if we reach back far enough.

I was just 3 years old when I was burned to a crisp on Waikiki Beach, my Uncle Garth later was the Head of U of H’s Oceanography Department for many years, and several of my cousins reside there now and/or were born there–one a flaming redhead who is part native Hawaiian, herself.

Thank you for all your lovely books about the “Plain People”!

  57. I feel people were more like the Amish back in pioneer times. I wish we could slow down a bit and enjoy time with friends and family. I really enjoy your books and always look forward to the next ones! ?

  58. I enjoy being out in nature. I love animals and most of what the outdoors has to offer. I would prefer a walk on a mountain trail to the beach. I love seeing God’s creations.

  59. Hi Wanda, I also like a simple life , I much prefer to read or do some Bible study than go to the mall. I enjoy every Amish book I get my hands on. My wonderful husband says it would be easy for me to be Amish because I dress similar to their style of dress, and wear no make up except for special occasions. I do like having a microwave and without a doubt I would miss my Keriug. I love hot tea I read. Have a very Merry Christmas , Cindy

  60. I too like the Amish don’t care for large crowds of people being all smashed in right together. I also like the quiet and solitude of being outdoors in Mother Nature’s beauty.

  61. Wanda, My grandparents were hard working farmers. They loved everything about life. They were not Amish but Methodists who went to a small country church. I referred to them as Nannie and Poppa. They loved the simple things about life: spending time with family, farming, cooking, going on a car ride to look at fall foliage. My Nannie and Poppa has been gone many years but that is one reason that I love your books: I can compare the Amish’s love of life to the fond memories I cherish about my grandparents.

  62. Wanda, I love reading your books. I have almost everyone of them and sometimes I read them a second time. At present I’m behind in reading them but I’ll catch up soon!
I grew up in WV the first 9 years of my life. We moved to Ohio at that time. My parents had very little but lots of love. I’m probably more like my Mom than any of my siblings.
Keep on writing so I can keep on reading. Hope to see you again some day. Saw you at Holmes County flea market a few years ago.
    Have a very blessed Christmas.

  63. Nothing has brought me more solace in my life than sitting on the hillside overlooking an Amish farmers land. It actually brought me to tears. I live such a busy life that I had to put the breaks on, and this trip back in 2009 made me realize that living a simpler life was so much healthier for me both physically and spiritually. One of the first books I purchased from you was your devotional “The Simple Life.” This book actually brought me back to my Faith. Thank you for your inspiration. May you have a blessed and peaceful holiday season.

  64. Driving thru the Amish areas of Pennsylvania a few years ago made me realize what a peaceful way of life they really do have. Would be wonderful if we all could get back to a simpler existence

  65. I have memories of my mom hanging her clothes on the line. She still does when the weather is nice. Mom is also an excellent cook and baker. She uses Amish recipes as well as her own mother’s.
My parents also garden. Dad says that tending the garden is therapeutic to him. My mom also plants a lot of flowers every summer. They’ve had Amish friends for many years and they have built a trust with them. When I’ve visited these Amish communities, it is nice to see that we also share similar values as them. Hard work, growing some of our own food, and making our properties look nice by planting and taking care of flowers. Passing these traditions on to me, and now me to my daughter has been an excellent way to live. Happy holidays, and I wish the best to you and your family.

  66. I am not sure if there are other defined groups of people who li e similar to the Amish and honestly, until I read your journal post I never really thought of things that way.

I live in Ontario, Canada in a small(ish) town that is surrounded by farmland and I find that the people who live here tend to have much different priorities than city dwellers.

Whereas the acquisition of “things” seems to matter a great deal in the city, it is less so where I live. We still like nice things but labels matter much less. Designer clothing is almost non-existent and noone I know would spend hundreds of dollars on a purse or pair of shoes just because of who made it. Maybe that makes us a bit like the Amish.

  67. I recently went on the Walk to Emmaus, a 72 hour retreat without a car , watch or cell phone, it was amazing. The experience was very spiritual and calming. I believe the Amish must be so blessed to be able to live that life every day. It was nice to witness a truly loving atmosphere. I pray everyone has a blessed Christmas.

  68. I grew up in the Middlebury area and my parents still live there. We have always been around the Amish so its hard not to think of them as one of us. We totally respect their way of life and my mom came from a simple life as a child. Some of the ways the amish cook is the way my mom cooks yet today. We have a big garden and can and freeze things for the winter. We have several recipes that have been handed down from my Amish relatives from years back plus we have added some recipes from our Amish friends.
    Have a blessed Christmas!

  69. My kids and I enjoy the outdoors. We are saving up to buy a camper as we miss camping. I am trying to do more simple things in my life.

  70. Shakers live similar to “plain” people and are kind, thoughtful and make use of simple items to live simply and efficiently. I go to a quilt show every year and admire all the designs and artistry including those that are Amish (somber colors) and the Hawaiian quilts with their Kandisky-like shapes appliqued on top of a white background with intricate patterns. At the Farmer’s Market, the Amish sell bread, bakery, veggies (just picked baby lettuce from the field which melts in the mouth – so fresh), preserves like elderberry, which is hard to find; fresh produce and handmade goods uplift my day. There’s also the five Der Dutchman Restaurant in Ohio which have the best dessert ever – Date Pudding. The Amish believe in self-sufficiency and rely on their neighbors and kin to help with problems. They have family pride and religion plays a big part in their lives.

  71. Wanda- I agree with you whole heartedly I would rather walk the beach then to go to the mall .I am a very spiritual person and I love spending time with my family and friends. The only way to live life to the fullest is to enjoy the simple things in life .

  72. Similar to the Amish, I enjoy family time. I really like how the Amish are close to their family as well as friends. I love trying new Amish recipes and learning to can food just like them. Also as you mentioned you enjoyed the beach and God’s creation, I enjoy the beach and all the sounds, but I equally enjoy nature walks in a fall setting. Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year!

  73. Like the Amish, Hawaiians, and Wanda Brunstetter ‘s reading community, we all want to take good care of our families. Our love of God and our families, shows in our meal preparation, our homes and all we do to keep our families healthy and happy.
    Merry Christmas.

  74. There truly is nothing like God’s wonderful creation! I live in a desert region and receive great peace from being able to look out over wide open spaces to see mountain ranges and blue skies. And the occasional tree is a welcome sight, especially those that have been nurtured for many, many years. The dry air and sound of the wind are as soothing to me as the fresh ocean breezes and sound of the surf must be to the folk that live on the Hawaiian Islands. It is a constant struggle, though, to find that quiet, simple way of life. Those that find it are truly blessed!

    Merry Christmas to all!

  75. I love the quite early in the morning and in the summer I prefer to sit and listen to the birds and other animals in the morning outside while drinking my tea.

  76. I enjoy being outdoors. One of my most favorite activities is to drive down to the overlook at the river. I study the trees, and the water, and listen to nature’s sounds. I get a great sense of peace just being there and being quiet. I pray there, and when I need to pray the most, I go walking to pray. I believe God listens to use when we are quiet and not distracted by technology.
I enjoy the simple things, and I love the Lord.

  77. I love to go to the Smoky Mountains and enjoy the scenery. I also love to sit on my country front porch watching wildlife and birds. There’s real pleasure in the sounds and sights of my 5 grandchildren playing in the yard. They all live on our farm. My similarity would include my long hair and modest clothing.

  78. Hi Wanda; I feel like I can relate with you because I’m part Penna. Dutch and the other half is German. But you are so right that God has given us so much to be thankful for and our mother earth is so beautiful.I tell my husband all the time that we don’t have to go on a cruise or a trip to another country because we have so much right here.My husband’s accent with Penna. dutch is so strong that when we go out to Lancaster,PA. the Amish ask him all the time if he is from PA. and he tells them he sounds a lot like them.We just love to go visit the Amish because it feels like home.Happy Holiday’s to you and your family.

  79. We like to live a simple life, don’t buy alot of STUFF. We would rather take a ride on the backroads than go shopping or go to the malls etc. Way back in my family there were amish,, maybe thats why we love the Ohio Amish and visit so often. Its so relaxing and love it.

  80. I grew up in Western New York in the country.. There were many Amish that lived around us. We lived a much more simple life than those that lived in the big cities. I grew up in the 1960’s. There were only 60 in my graduation class . Most of us did not have cars in high school like they do today.

  81. I think the Mennonites and Brethren are similar to the Amish. Living a simpler life is what I strive for but don’t always accomplish. I love being with my mom and aunt hearing stories from their childhood. Family time is important. Plus, there is nothing better than sitting by a nice cozy fire reading, talking or turning off the TV and computer and just being quiet! Blessings for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  82. I love going to the Beach because it’s so relaxing and I love to look for shells and walk on the beach. Especially since it’s so nice and relaxing. I also like to read while I am at the beach.
