PATIENCE PAYS OFF

During one of our visits to an Amish schoolhouse in Indiana, my husband made some twisty balloon animals for the children. Since Richard has been blowing up balloons for a good many years, his lungs are strong and he rarely uses a pump. The children were impressed at how easy he made it look, and several of the boys wanted to try blowing up a balloon. After a few attempts, all except one of the red-faced boys gave up. The determined boy had a bit more patience than the others. He continued trying to blow up the balloon, until he ran out of air and passed out for a few seconds. Undaunted, and unhurt, he picked himself up and continued blowing until his balloon was fully inflated.

Seeing the patience of this young boy made me think of how easily some people give up when they’re faced with a challenge. Sometimes we give up praying because we don’t receive an answer quickly enough. God wants us to wait patiently for Him, and He wants us to pray and continually seek to do His will.

Are you faced with a challenge today that seems un-daunting? Ask the Lord for the courage and strength to keep going. Ask Him for an attitude of patience as you wait for answers from Him.

  4. Hi Wanda
I’m glad you and Richard enjoyed your trip I just love hearing stories like this. I’m glad that little guy didn’t give up and accomplished his goal of blowing up the balloon. Too often times we forget how to be patient and let God be in control…it makes me think of a time last year when I was going through a rough time at my job and was looking for a new job..I had an interview at this job I really wanted and I went to the building for my interview after days of calling and finally getting an interview just to find out they weren’t going to interview me because all the positions had been filled. I was crushed thinking I was going to have a new start with a better paying job and now I had to be stuck in my current job forever. I pretty much gave up hope and my patience with god was running thin I couldn’t think why he’d give me an interview with this job I wanted just to not have me get it, and then I got a call from another job I had applied for months before that I wasn’t sure I wanted at all and didn’t bother even calling to see if my application was looked at…and this job was going to offer me more money, stable hours and career advancement in the future…Needless to say I took that job and it was the best thing I ever decided to do..I love my job and I realized that God had bigger and better plans for me in my life and he only wants me to be as happy as I can be if I’d only let him be in control more often…so I definitely am trying to allow god to be in more control because he definitely has things planed for my life I couldn’t ever dream of.

Thanks for listening to my little story and sharing all your wonderful stories with me. God bless you, have a great day

  5. I am faced with many situations that I need patience. Thank you for your writings and this uplifting journal entry. I had ️to recently wait for the return of a family member. I had to remind myself that it was not my time but God’s time.

  6. I found, sadly to say, that latter on in my life that I needed to read scripture everyday and meditate on them every second of the day to present myself daily to the Lord with a clean heart and a clean mind. Both, our heart and mind reflects who we serve in this world.

The youngster learned patience through his care takers through their modeling and through their words.

The Scriptures that came to mind were:
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. -Romans 12:12

But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. -Romans 8:25
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. – Galatians 6:9

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. – Psalm 37:7-9

  7. Just what I needed this morning! A job situation and financial issues are making for days when it is hard….but God is good all the time!

  8. Patience is not always easy to maintain but it is good to be reminded of patience, perseverance and hope that one day you can reach the place you are trying to reach.

    Love your thoughtful posts.

  9. A good reminder for me. Have some family issues and have to remember to be patient and for God’s will to be done. Thank you

  10. I am not the most patience person I admit, but I do pray daily for strength in that area. Great little story to remind us to persevere on with patience through whatever it is we are going through or facing.

  11. Determination, steadfastness, keeping on, patience; they all go hand in hand. To be steadfast in prayer is something we all need to do. We tend to remember that when things are rough, but it should be an everyday thing.

  12. Thank you so much for this story today. I am waiting (sometimes impatiently) to go to the airport this evening to pick up my 15 year old son. He went to Mexico for a week on a mission trip and I have not been able to have any contact with him since Sunday. I am very proud that he wanted to go and help teach the underprivileged Mexican children about God’s love. I am working on being patient waiting for the time to leave. Have a wonderful day and I will miss seeing you in Ohio next weekend.

  13. What a great journal entry on patience. Like the young boy trying to blow up the balloon, we all need to have patience in trying to get something finished that is not easy for us do. If you have that patience, you will get the task done. God wants us all to have patience in what he has planned for each of us.

  14. In this fast paced world, we are pushed to rush and get things done now! Patience is a coveted attribute.

  15. Oh my goodness…what a patient & persistent little boy! Patience is my most lacking virtue, especially in traffic! 😉

  16. patience had never been one of my best qualities, but slowly with God’s help I am getting better. It took two Yeats of trying to to become pregnant to get my beautiful daughter. Then four more years to get my son. I was very impationt until I had my fist miscarriage. This forced me to slow down and realize it will happen when and if God wants it to. Now with a rambunctious five year old and a run a muck one year old, patience is an everyday necessity! Thanks for sharing!

  17. The patience of that little boy is something that we should all strive for. We can learn so much from our children and grandchildren. The Lord has been gracious in giving us eyes to see with, ears to listen with and a heart to learn with, but often we take for granted what the Lord has given us that we don’t open our eyes, ears and heart and our minds are closed to learning. I have 8 grandchildren, and it’s not always their patience that shows through. However quite often when I see them sitting still, quietly waiting for a story to be read, I am reminded that they, too, can be very patient.

  18. This was a good reading for me today. After a very busy week that involved a lot of physical output, my body was not cooperating with my plans for today. I needed to sit back and let my body rest. toward evening I felt much better. I needed to be patient with my body and let God restore it.

  19. Poor little love for passing out, but well done that he was patient and persisted.

I find I am more patient now than I used to be when I was younger.

  20. Speaking of Patience, I never knew if I really had it in me or not, but I do know that working as a residential staff in a deaf school for 30+ years it has taught me lot of patience, had so many autistic kids that really need help, and I realized that me and my co workers were the only 2 out of 24 staff have patience to work with these kids. By our observation, we realized that we both came from deaf families….with my being deaf and parents as well, my co worker also from deaf family, her parents along with her children are deaf….she has lot of patience as well…that it may have instilled patience in us. I guess we will never know. It was just interesting how we were able to get through these kids while others could not. I remember just before I got injured on the job, was dismissed on disability, had fallen, kids were so upset that I left them…however I was able to give them some support through Facebook…which was nice for them. They were telling me how unhappy they were with the substitute who did not have patience, and they are constantly getting in trouble. When I found out who it was, I realized that these precious kids were in trouble, because the staff did not have any patience at all. So thinking about this story above, really made me think about my job and my kids as I call them…I have a hearing child who is so happy that I am home full time, as I have been working swing shift while she was growing up, so maybe it was a good thing for me. but not for those kids. My best friend works as a supervisor to the residential staff, says that wished I was back in there working so she asked me what my tactics were, so told her, Patience. She said oh no none of those people have patience. Its really sad to see how people are losing it as time rolls.
Thanks for sharing that story with me, as it made me realized about myself.

  21. Exactly I chat to him like his sitting right beside me a funny answer to prayer you will like daughter has never seen snow we prayed God please let it snow on our lawns in Jesus name amen he answered our prayers but in ways we would never imagine lol
We heard it was snowing up the road but to conjested on roads and we have a disabled son so white snow would of caused seizures as he has photo sensitivity epilepsy.
Low and behold our grocerys are home delivered and was canceled due to the snow were the store was were they come from so was re booked for the next morning
TRUCK TURNES UP WITH SNOW ON ROOF OF DELIVERY TRUCK
WE ASKED HIM TO SWEEP IT OF WERE DID IT LAND ON OUR FROUNT LAWN.
LOL God has a sense of humour we prayed for snow believing it will come and God had it delivered direct to our door via delivery we had snow on our FROUNT lawn we had snow fights and nothing is impossible for God even in our impossible situation the snow survived a 30-40 min journey to our house and landed on our FROUNT lawn .

  22. Thanks I really needed this reminder. I am having a fiery furnace experience right now and I really need to be more patient and long suffering

  23. I enjoyed reading this story! A good reminder to all of us! I pray daily and answers to prayers come in all forms, so be patient, it will come!

  24. What a wonderful story! That young boy has grasped the importance of being patient that many of us as adults are still trying to apply to our everyday lives. Thank you for sharing this and may we all have a lot more patience.

  25. What inspirational words and an added bonus for my Monday morning challenges. Thanks for your wonderful books. I truly enjoy them!!

  26. I for one could use more patience in my daily life, this world has gotten so fast paced that I think we forget to just slow down sometimes and things have a way of working out.

  27. Patience is certainly diffiicult in today’s world. I know for me I can use help in this area and know help is given when asked. Thanks for the reminder.

  28. This was a good reminder. I think one of the reasons we have to learn to wait on the Lord, is to build us up, and not to tear us down. Faith works, and that work is sometimes, carrying on, until our prayer is answered and our goal is achieved. It is often too easy just to get our prayer answered quickly, the growing in our character comes from carrying on in what we are able to do, and trusting He will do what is necessary in the interim, as well as at the end.

  29. Your words remind my of a poem that a friend gave me during a very dark period in my life. It said do not give up keep going because you may have reached the finish line if you had just went around the curve. My paraphrase but it reminds me that the only way to accomplish anything is to keep going. You can take a rest but you have to continue. I enjoyed the young boy who did not give up and you know he will be a successful young man.

  30. Perseverance and patience does pay. However, I can honestly say that is not always my first reaction to a situation. This has been a challenging year health-wise for both me and my mom. We live quite a distance apart and she couldn’t get to me and I couldn’t get to her. We have spent two wonderful weeks together and that is an answer to our prayers. BTW, I have always been terrified of balloons!

  31. Hi Wanda,
I believe the greatest gift our lord could give us is patience,I’m sorry to say that my husband lacks
this item very much.He tells me that he has alot on his mind in which I have to believe him.He has
alot of health problems, but the good Lord has given me enough patience for the both of us.

  32. Hi Wanda, I just got home from a trip to Sugar Creek and Walnut grove. I learn ed you had been there the week before and had a book signing.. I live in Texas and through the librarian at church I learned of you and your wonderful books. She was the librarian at our church for over 25 years and we have a wonderful library because of her love of books. I took over the library about 3 years ago to her declining health. I started reading the books that were fiction but with Christian values. Yours were some of the books I read. I loved the way you described the Amish people and I learned so much about that I didn’t know. We have most of your books in our library and I tell all the ladies they need to read them.Sugar Creek and Walnut Grove have been on my bucket list of places to go and I did. It was a wonderful trip and I thoroughly enjoyed it. You did a wonderful job telling it just how is and now I am a wonderful memory. In Christian love Marvelyn

  33. Many pride themselves in doing everything fast. To really savor an experience, the slower you travel and go gives you time to feel it through more senses. And when you try to recall what happened, the sight, sound and smells co-mingle to help you relive the experience and you can give more details. So patience pays off with experiences. It also yields more time to assess and evaluate and to check ideas with friends and family before acting upon them. I keep thinking about the marshmallow test and how young kids were in a room with a marshmallow in front of them and told not to eat it. Most couldn’t last longer than a few seconds. My challenge today is to organize books and papers.
